Replacement tires

I just noticed today that my front tires are running bare in the center. They have almost 30K on them. Not sure I can afford stock model from the dealer. Any thoughts out there on alternate replacements?

DON'T buy the stock tires, especially from the dealer!
There are many excellent tires out there, and all of them will be cheaper than the dealer's price. Tirerack.com is an excellent source of information about tires, including objective comparison tests that they perform under repeatable conditions, as well as literally hundreds of millions of miles of owner surveys. Their tire prices are a substantial savings over brick & mortar retail outlets.
I just bought tires for my wife's car and the local Bridgestone outlet's price was several hundred dollars more (for the identical set of four tires, mounted and balanced) than tirerack's, even after adding in their shipping.
I recently put Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2's from tirerack.com on my A3, having selected them based on my priorities for noise, ride and wet handling, as they determined in this test:

Another fine tire is the Bridgestone RE960, a top all-season tire known for excellent all-around performance and good wear. I didn't select that one because it is about 5 lbs/tire heavier than the Michelins. Here's a test that includes the RE960's:

As noted in the previous post, Sumitomos are quite good and less expensive than the usual brands. Look through the various surveys at the link below to see how they and other tires compare in the Owner Surveys:

I just put stock sized 17" Dunlop Direzz Star Tac's on my 2010 A3 FWD. So far very happy with the grip and feel. I was looking for a warm weather canyon / track day option. So far so good, I bought from tire rack.
