Replacing sound system - BOSE?

My S3 has some (I believe) standard speaker system. Sound is allright, but nothing special.
Anyone have experience upgrading the sound system of the S3? Is BOSE the way to go? I have an impression you might get more value for money using other brands, but the quality is most important here.
A key point for me would be to use as many "hidden" components as possible. Filling up the not-so-big storage space available with speakers/amplifiers seems like a bad option.

it won't take much spaces in the trunk, and the tubes can be removed when you need that extra space. the amps can be attached behind the rear seats
