I am also looking for other applicaions that will work. I read that one person put on their Yakima from their A4. Help the guy that doesn't know much about roof racks. Thanks a lot.

I'm running the Thule, non-aero. I'm very happy with it, when its on the car. I use it mostly to hold a roof coffin.
Sounds like, for most people, it's Thule or yak. The two are comparable, and most people buy the rack that works best with the accessories they already have. You'll find people on there that have each, and most seem to be pretty happy with the either.
General consensus appears to be avoid the OEM rack. More money for something you can get after market, with more re-sale/ re-use opportunity.
Yak rear bars sit a little bit further back than the thule bars. That might be a factor for you, if you're planning on putting really long crap up there (sea kayaks, etc). However, I've run a box on mine a number of times, and the bars were plenty far enough apart for that.
Thule racks mount at the same spot as the factory racks (look for the small indents on each door frame).
Thule non-aero bars allow the open-sky to open completely. I believe Yak does as well. Thule aero bars will not clear the open sky.
If you go with Thule, these are the part numbers:
Foot pack 400XT
Fit Kit 2168
Load Bar: LB50
Box: 672 Evolution 1600
I've read that some have reused their bars from the A4, but my last car was a GTI, so I'm no help there.

I need a bike rack for my GTI, but am a bit concerned based on my experience with a Yakima in the mid 90's. Awful fit that scratched the paint on the roof, and was prone to air/water leaks.
The other option is a hitch mount, which would block access to the hatch and be more of an eye sore.
Whatever I choose, it'll be on the car most of the time since I'm in an apartment and have back problems, so I guess I'm looking for input on picking the lesser of two evils.
Gracias

I would have considered YAK if it was available. But in July 2005, it wasn't. So I went OEM.

short bars(48"), risers on rear of rack to permit open sky function, slightly trimmed clips to allow tighter fit to car,A4 clips on rear allow slightly better inward mount and better resistance to pull off, entire assembly mounted slightly forward to allow use of spoiler, "Yakima" on spoiler turned to rear because I like the look better.
