Does the ECU chip upgrade on an S3 require a re-solder on the board or is it mounted in socket.
If you need to solder in a new chip, what is the rough cost of another complete ECU if you decide to sell car as standard later on.
Thanks

The newer tha car model, more likely it needs soldering.
Some older cars tend to have socetted chips as stock. I haven't seen any new cars with factory sockets.
Since all A3's I know need soldering as other VW-group present models, I'm pretty sure so it is for S3 too.
The cost of a spare ECU varies from car manufacturer to another, but Audi seems rather cheep! A new ECU for A4 1.8T costs here in Finland 5000FIM (about 800USD), while for some Citroen HDI it costs 10000FIM (about 1600USD.

the chip is definately not socket its soldered, the ECU is the same Bosch item used throughout the 1.8t VAG range range just running different software for each model
