Safe to ride with open sky open and sunshade still closed/locked in?

I've only been half paying attention
but my car is definitely older than that (picked up 11/05 and it had sat in the lot for a few months), but I've had no problems with the clip "so far". (But then, it took 3 years for the coil packs and window regulators to go on my GTI...)
How does it break? Does the little latch go so it won't stay closed or something?
Just wondering what I have to look forward to.
Broken sunroof clip is still way less annoying than blown MAF, crappy coil packs and busted window regulators that I've had happen on more than one VW.

Looks like about 5 minutes labor for someone who's done it..
