simply because the Viper driver has the option of applying too much power and dealing with oversteer, while the Jetta driver does not ;-)

You're the one buying the car, right? You decided to walk into the showroom and pursue the purchase, right? The burden is on YOU to know everything there is to know about the car that will make a difference to you. as you pointed out, it's fairly simple to do this kind of research nowadays, you don't have to go anywhere near the dealership.
It's nice to think that car salespeople know the product inside out, upside down, but they actually only know one thing guaranteed - sales techniques.
They could just as easily be working down the street at Best Buy, or the local big box store. They are sales people, who happen to have ended up working at a car dealership. Never assume product knowledge; do your homework over and above. And then, to even the playing field, make sure you know as much about the sales process as them (ideally more).
