And I think, if I recall, that there is an amp in there as well as speakers that might be 1ohm. What am I getting myself into if I do this? Anyone else done it?

You have to get rid of the Bose speakers and amp.

Um. it gets expensive, i had this problem when i was throwing in my alpine touch screen from my old b5. unfortunatly Bose hates the world and makes you replace all the speakers because they are not compatible to the alpine system. currently i run a full alpine system in my car including:

-Alpine In-Dash Touchsensative Dvd/Cd/Navigation
- Alpine Type S Speakers
- Two 12" type E subwoofers
- 1600 Watt Fosgate mono block amp for my subs
- 800 Watt Fosgate 4-channel amp for my speakers
- Compotition Wiring
- Ported Fiberglass Box

the whole system is absolutly amazing. luckily. i paid no money for it because it was in my previous b5 that i bought with a shot sound system and spend the money saved on that to upgrade. had to change a few minor speakers because of sizing. grand total from the b5 to the a3. about 3.5k. it's a moneypit. but sounds nice. and if you get a new car. make sure you keep your old stuff. because you just put it back in. and rip out your precious system.

and umm. tinted windows (recommended even if you dont throw a luxurious sound system into it). and then be a bastard like me. and change your blinking led's on your alarm system to purple. so people know what's up. easy $50. that saves you a crapload in the longhaul.
