Default Soft windshield glass

All, I have an 06' A3 that is covered in very small pits (micro-pits) from sand and gravel on winter roads. Is this common for A3 windsheilds? Has anyone had theirs replaced with harder glass?

It's a standard feature of Audi windshields. I'm on my second one ('10 A4) and it's got a chip in the middle and it's sand blasted. I spoke to a parts guy when I had to have the OEM one replaced, and he admited that Audi started using thinner windshields.

When you get a replacement do NOT go to Satellite - they use inferior glass. Get a shop recommended by the dealer. Local guys will get you OEM glass (Pilkington).

That's pure B.S. The thickness has nothing to do with the pitting. It is a known fact that European auto manufacturers use 'softer' glass to prevent cracking. I have owned dozens of Europeans cars from various manufacturers and they all had softer and pitted windshields. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.

I don't take anything from the Stealership as the gospel truth. Hell, I don't even go there unless it's something they're going to pay for. Especially the POS dealers in the DC Metro area - bunch of pretentious arseholes.

I hear what you're saying - just the nature of the beast

+1 All my VWs and Audis have had that problem. There was a huge sandstorm one time on the way home, and it totally messed up my windshield and hood. I would not shy away from Satellite glass, provided I have windshield replacement on my insurance policy. My reason is if OEM glass is going to get chipped so easily I might as well.
