Stolen Keys

The keys have been stolen for a mates A3, address details of where the car is kept were with the keys too, so obviously something needs to be done,
first thing he considered was changing the locks, at a cost of approximatly a grand,
someone else said there were other options to do with the frequency of the key fob- i.e. you could change the frequency of the key fob- so the old set would not match the freq the car expects and therefore would not open,
sounds great in theory,
anyone know the best options in this scenario?

a similar thing happened to me before, if you take your car to the dealer he can disable the stolen key on the car computer so it can't be used to start the car. the keys can however still be used to open the door and boot locks, so you can either get him to change the factory fitted alarm so that the scumbag thief can't disable it, and if he opens the car with the stolen key the alarm will go off, or he can fit another alarm which will result thing happening. Changing the locks is too much money
