Thinking about buying an A3

I'm about to sell my 2007 A3, but not because I didn't love it. My commute shortened to the 4 blocks from 40 miles.
1. 40k miles... not ONE service that wasn't maintenance. Replace front brake disks and 1 set of tires.
2. It SUCKS in the snow without snow tires. I had allseasons, drove it in all kinds of snow. No good without snows.
3. I don't agree with the road noise issue, I guess he has overinflated tires of nubbies or something. It has more noise than my q7 or Allroad, but its not that bad.
4. Get a used A4 quattro, much better in the snow.
my 10 cents.
Good luck!

Of course, if your driveway requires climbing, or you have a very severe winter, your needs might differ.

Owned my 2008 A3 since last June and no mechanical issues. I don't notice any excessive road noise either. No real snow driving yet but I defiently notice a differnece in my FWD in wet compared to the A$ AWD and Subaru WRX AWD I use to have. I miss the AWD which stayed firm on the ground no matter how hard I drove it. But as long as the tires are in good shape, the traction control should do its job if you're not pushing it too hard in the snow.

Having just gone through the A3 shopping process, I would add:
What are the options? The bare bones 2006 2.0T is pretty bare. If it doesn't have the sport or premium package it may have nearly nothing (cloth upholstery, no fog lights, non-sport steering wheel among others). The premium package in 2006 gave you most the basic emenities. The sport package added a rear hatch spoiler, the sports seats (though non-powered driver's unlike premium), and sport suspension but was mostly the same as premium (fog lights, 3 spoke steering wheel with controls, multispoke bi-color 17" rims, interior lighting and storage kit, leather).
'06 A3 Lava Gray/Black 3.2 - everything but Titanium

I disagree. I drove this winter on all seasons and was very impressed with the car's performance, and it doesn't have quattro. It wasn't perfect and would certainly benefit from snow tires, but it was more than adequate. Unlike my previous car I haven't yet seen a compelling need for winter tires.

I head up to the snow about 10 times during the winter months, occasionally in some seriously crappy Sierra snowfall.
Winter tires, ESP/ABS, FWD = 95% approval rating

I am also in the market for a new car... getting away from the bulky SUV, I looked at a 2007 MB C230,Acura TSX,2007BMW 328 and an audi A3 or A4..
I like that A4 and the A3, Love the look of the A3, just not sure if it is big enough and for a few thousand more, I can get a used BMW.. the Benz I drove and was not that impressed, much rather get the Acura TSX over the MB C230..
BMW is still a fine can and it may end up being a choice between the bimmer and the A3... I looked at the TSX because I just love the reliability of the japanese auto's.... I just don't want to spend time and a lot of money with these cars in the repair shops. I had a range rover/land rover 2002, and I hated that car.. Was a repair nightmare.. kind of soured me on european cars.. I am wondering if I should stick with the japanese cars. Great priced, fully loaded. Reliable..
Any advice?
