UPDATE: I did end up installing these. Thanks to jkwan's posting,
I was able to take the short route. I just used a Dremel to trim down the rear tabs by 2mm, then slightly bent the tabs inward (just a little finger pressure). That did the trick. The whole installation took about an hour. They fit 99.9% as well as the OEM ones and definitely improve the look of the A3. :-)
