Perhaps this has already been discussed, but when I googled "Audi A3" I was greeted with these images:

I'm not going to offer any commentary on the vehicle's safety, as it is highly ranked in the NHSTA tests. Perhaps someday they'll do the 100+mph crash test. Until then, it looks like some people will continue to do their own experimenting outside the lab.
And I don't think the police found Dietrich after this one either.

like a wire cheese cutter. Audi engineers think it might have been survivable if the car had broadsided a flatter/larger object instead of focusing all the energy into one very narrow line of impact.
English Translation(thanks paivag):
"Feb 20th 2004: Two men, of 27 and 21 years, died yesterday after a long suffering accident when they tried to over pass cars, on a forest road, in Maceda, Ovar. The accident only involved the victims of the vehicle. The accident occurred about 7h30, close to a Portuguese Air Force Base in that region. "When we arrived to the location there was nothing we could do because the victims did not have vital signs. The impact would have been, probably, very violent due to the state of the car", informed the Firemen of Esmoriz. After the investigation, the bodies were transported by the firemen to the morgue of the Hospital of Saint Maria from the Fair."
"Looking at the speedo, it froze at 90km/h at the time of impact. Bear in mind that at this time the car was travelling sideways, so the wheels would not have been turning at anything like the vehicle's forward speed. Comparing this to similar accidents I have seen with similar damage, I'd suggest they were doing between 160 and 190km/h on impact.

The firefighter who guessed at the speed, indicated the car probably left the road at around 100 to 120mph.
