Valet key to wallet key..
One of the first things I did after getting the A3 home was to disassemble the valet key to check the feasability in converting it to a compact wallet key, so I can't get locked out.
What's inside:

The transponder capsule is bedded in CA cement, making it difficult to remove without breaking. I'd probably have to cut most of the plastic away and then soak what's left in debonder for a day ot two.
Then, make a new, flatter handle that includes the capsule.

I'm surprised...can any other A3 owner substantiate this as well?
I received one for both my B5 and B7 A4 and just assumed it was commonplace for the entire Audi model lineup...hmmm...

Stage 2: Destruction..
OK, after some careful sanding, hacking and slashing, I now have this:
<img src="http://webpages.charter.net/dwarner2/Vkey2.jpg">
I've dropped the transponder capsule with it's plastic into the bottle of debonder.
About 20 minutes later, I dumped it out, and:

A genuine RFID "chip", just like the one the gummint implanted in your brain last year :-)
Next, I need to make a flat plastic handle that will hold it all together and give me enough leverage to open the door and start the car.
