Default Weird problem with hill hold!

Cliff's notes: Having the driver side door a bit open turns my hill hold off

The driveway to my house is a pretty steep decline, so I typically back into the driveway with the front of the car facing uphill. When I turn the car back on I put the car in drive, release the parking brake, and drive up the driveway, no problem. The hill hold always kicks in and helps me get the car moving.

Today I attempt to do the same thing, but all of a sudden I start rolling back because the hill hold didn't engage. I almost hit my garage door because of it actually. That's when things get weird...

I realized I hadn't completely closed the driver side door because the indicator in the instrument panel told me so. So I re-close my door and the hill hold feature now works and I drive up the driveway. Out of my curiosity I wanted to know if the hill hold problem had something to do with the door being open, so I reopened my door and bam, the hill hold doesn't work again. Anyone else experience this? Is this a bug? A feature that I don't understand?

Maybe relevant info: '06, 2.0T, DSG (obv)

It's probably to allow people to push their cars in neutral.
