why is my A3 burning through oil?

The Marietta, GA dealership (excellent dealership) told me yesterday that Audi is saying that burning a quart of oil at 1,000 miles or below is an issue. Anything above that is "normal". The tech told me that this is a very common problem. I have to put in a quart every 1,500 miles or so. Another blemish my perception of Audi quality. This is our third and probably not final Audi, but...
Bottom line, it's all in how you get those rings to seat.

Sure it does. Mobi1 5W-30 has a lower kinematic viscosity and a lower High Temp High Shear than a VW 502 oil. It is engineered for fuel economy and it's completely normal for a Resource Conserving oil to shear to a 20 weight. Do you think that a 20 weight oil will burn?
Although, I do agree that too easy of a break-in leads to oil consumption but we don't know how the break-in was done since he isn't the original owner.

Are you sure it's burning oil? I'm pretty certain the TSFI uses its own motor oil to lube the turbo.

Just had my 2007 in the Audi dealer for the same issue. Apparently there are some 2006-7 2.0's that have an issue with bad piston rings. Mine was burning like a quart every 400-500 miles. Dealer had to replace the rings, which is a huge job, luckily I bought the car at Carmax and the extra warrenty I bought covered the $3200 repair cost. Sorry to bring the bad news. There is a similar thread over on VWVortex.com about this issue in the Audi section. Good luck.
