Why not GTI

Why not GTI
Reviewing the posts on this board, I am a little confused as to why you chose the A3 over the GTI. So far I have read the the GTI is basically the same car with better handling, more room, and a better steering wheel. The only advantage I have read for the A3 is lower insurance rates.
Please enlighten me.

"Adult car" vs "Kid car" is probably some people's response
There's definitely a difference in the average VW GTi vs Audi A3 owner in this regard.
I was considering a GTI, but when I saw the used pricing about the same between the two, I'd prefer to have the Audi.
I'd be interested to see the rear leg room differences - it didn't appear to me that that GTI had as much room as the A3.

I wish someone would explain the "better steeing wheel" bit.
My wife bought an '08 R32 last October and I think the steering wheel in that car is god-awful. It's only comfortable to hold in the 9-3 o'clock position; hold it anywhere else it just feels awkward. The paddle shifters are too close to the edge. On several occasions, I've inadvertently changed gears just by turning the wheel; and I don't have large hands.
Beside the comfort issue, I think the R32 wheel is ugly compared to my A3's. I've never noticed, but is is the steering wheel on a base A3 different than the one in A3(3.2)?

image? interior preference
too many people here drive/treat/perceive the gti as if it's some sort of super sports car, so I'd look like a major **** driving one.
plus, I dont like the roundish bubbly look of the gti.

Its all about what YOU like. They are basically the same car, with different +/-.
Both are great, some like one look over another, and value certain things more than others such as image etc.

Obvious missed reasons...
A3 w/Sports suspension is basically the same setup as a GTI.
Add the cachet of the marque and upscale interior (as well as much better looking rear body lines, IMO) and it's not such a walkover.
Factor in the dealer incentives, it's similarly priced.
Then, being 25 years old, calling my insurance company decided for me. It was 400% more expensive annually for the GTI over the Audi A3.
