Which are wider tires: 225/45 17 or 225/40 18? And opinion wise...do you think 19" rims are too big

on the A3 in general? I mean, you could run them easily but would it be impractical? Would the ride be too harsh and would there be no performance gains as compared to 18's?

I would say that the 225/40 18 would be a little wider but not by much. I went from 17 to 19 and have found that they are no too harsh and the roads here in the WNY spring suck. I was a bit worried going to 235/35 19's but after having them on for a few weeks, no complaints. No fitment issues either, stock sport suspension.

Rochester, NY. I have pics but have not figured out how to post them yet. They are Flashpoint wheels and will be distributed by Stratmosphere later this spring. I would be happy to email you some pics.

They ride slightly harsher than stock, not too big a difference.
If you are concerned about performance, you're better off sticking with 18s which will be lighter in weight and I think there are a couple more perf. benefits that others may chime in on.
As for 19s being too big for our cars......... I think not![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

225/40-18s can be a little wider if they are on 8" wide rims compared to the stock 7.5" rims. The important thing is package weight: a 27Lb tire on a 27lb rim is going to ride and handle like doggie-doo compared to a 23lb tire on a 18lb rim, and won't have to be a racer to notice it. 19s also mean very low profile tires, which mean lots of ride harshness and easy rim damage on potholes and curbs.
I'm running 225/40-18s on 8" rims and that's as low profile as I'de ever run on the street. My track tires and wheels are 17s because they are both lighter and less expensive.
