Default Key fob(s) won't work after key fob battery change(s)

Hello,

I have a 2015 A3. When I bought the car, I was given two key fobs.

Both of them are now dead. I started the car by pressing the key(s) up against the steering column and got the "key not in car/low battery" alerts.

I bought new batteries and changed the batteries on both. But both are still totally dead. No light comes on when I hit the buttons.

What is going on and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

WJ

Occam's razor approach, I like that!

Hard to put the wrong size battery into the fob, more likely the polarity is the wrong way around (which is very easy to do).
