2018 RS3....loving the car... SO much fun!
No stranger to APR, like their stuff.
On the RS3 they "recommend" the intercooler for Stage 1.
Other tunes on their site "require" intercooler replacement.
Has anyone gone Stage 1 without the Intercooler?
My feeling is that the cars computer has a charge temperature sensor and on a hot day if heat soak occurs it will just dial things back.
Also, I think they offer the iPhone app so you can load the stock program and change back & forth.
I'm thinking about running Stage 1 without the intercooler in cooler weather and going back to stack mapping in warmer temperatures.
Thoughts?

I have Stage I and no IC on my RS3. I did install an IC on my previous S3 but that was to achieve Stage 2+ goals. Wasn't required for Stage 1 there. Do not believe the IC is 'required' for Stage 1 at all. If you decide to track the car in any way or live in a really hot climate then I would recommend it for sure however. I can't switch my tunes. I'm Stage 1 93 octane all the time. Your logic seems sound however. Again, tracking the car and environment play a big factor in the IC decision. I don't really like the thought of removing the nose of my car currently either. Just had a full front end wrap done. Might change my mind and get the IC down the road but not a consideration now. Enjoy your RS3!

I'll second all Fixeroh's points. I've been running stage 1 with the stock IC as well (91 octane since I can't get 93 easily in this area). I'll be getting an upgraded IC installed this coming Friday and see if I feel any difference in the stage 1 setup. The tune has enough protections in it to know when the IATs are too high and to dial things back to be safe. Honestly, most tunes have that built in unless you're doing "DIY" tunes. It's up to you to decide what's best for you.
Having said that, I've felt the car dial things back on a few 90+ deg days in my area. It just doesn't feel as fast as it did the day prior. Then the temps drop and the morning temps go into the low 60s and the car just loves it. I'm really looking forward to 55deg temps as the previous turbo cars I've had REALLY enjoy that weather. Rainy 55deg days just make the car that much more enjoyable.
In the end, the stage 1 tune (at 91 or 93 levels) probably don't "require" an upgraded IC but it also won't hurt to have it.
