I just put on my winter wheels and tires (Blizzak LM60 - 18x8 and 245/40/18). When I went to check the tire pressure, I noticed the sticker on the door panel suggested 42 PSI. Using that as a reference, I inflated the winter wheels to that pressure since my summer wheels are also 18s.
This seems a bit high to me. Is that what the OEM summer tires are running? Is that what we should also be using for the winter setup? Thanks!

I believe the door sticker is recommended "full load" pressure. Check your owner's manual for "normal load" pressure. I believe the recommended pressures are 38 psi front and 32 psi rear, under normal load, for OEM 18" all season tires.
What does it say on the sidewall of the tire? Usually it will say what the recommended inflation pressure is. Also make sure you "set" your TPMS once the tires are inflated to the correct setting.

Max pressure printed/embossed on a tire sidewall is the maximum cold inflation pressure that the tire can safely handle as determined by the tire manufacturer regardless of the car they are mounted on. Exceeding the maximum pressure could lead to the tire exploding, de-laminating over time or wearing down more quickly, creating a possible hazard in the future. This maximum pressure on the tire sidewall is not the same as the recommended inflation pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer for the particular model vehicle. Check the owner’s manual since, as has been posted, the door frame label is only for full load. I typically inflate to somewhere between minimum and maximum pressures in the manual.
Need to know more before I can calculate it for you.
From car , best seperate weighed wheel loads in the loading you want to know the advice pressure for, second bes axle weighing, but in lack of those we will have to estimate the loads. Then I need empty weight and weight division ( motor in front or back), and the way you load it for the situation ( persons and load and about where). Also give GAWR/GVWR ( Gross Axle/Vehicle Weight Rating).
Then maximum speed you sertainly wont go over for even a minute.
sometimes needed camber angle , often done for behind.
From tires : maximum load or loadindex
kind of tire to determine the pressure needed for maximum load up to 160km/99m/h, also called maxloadpressure or reference-pressure, and is not the maximum pressure of tire. If XL/reinforced/Extraload somewhere written on sidewall its such a tire , otherwise its a P-tire/normal car tire.
Speedcode of tire ( letter S,T,H,V,W,Y)
Also give sises , but you already mentioned them.
Give it and I will give a lowest save pressure for the situations you give data for.
42 psi is maxloadpressure of XL// in Europe, America uses 41 psi.
So I suspect they gave maxloadpressure for XL/tire wich most low H/W tires are. Strange is that they give it for front and back, front mostly can do with lower.
Greatings from a Dutch pigheaded self declared tire pressure specialist.

This is an anomaly unique (and in error) to the USA due to regulation. You are correct, it's completely backwards.
Audi owners are still fortunate to find comprehensive inflation pressure for Normal load and MAX Load printed in their Owner's Manual. By law, the B pillar label shows MAX Load only (5 persons, 5 suit cases).
I snapped a few pictures of the sticker and tire when I was outside. The sticker says 42 PSI but doesn't mention if it's normal or full load. The tire itself has a maximum pressure of 50 PSI.
When looking in the manual, it looks like 42 PSI is indeed the maximum pressure. It recommends the following for Normal and Full loads:
...I snapped a few pictures of the sticker and tire when I was outside. The sticker says 42 PSI but doesn't mention if it's normal or full load....
In effect the label is saying maximum load, since it shows 42/42 for 5 passengers (2 front, 3 rear) and the maximum weight of 1102 lbs. Anyway, I would probably do 38 or 39 front and 36 rear – 35 sounds pretty low to me for the rears, unless you never have rear passengers or a load in the trunk, just my 2 cents – hope you get it right!
