Default 42-month leases

A lot of the Audi salesmen are recommending 42-month leases as opposed to the traditional 36-month deals... What are the financial pros/cons of each (aside from the logistics of keeping a car for 6 extra months)?

I apologize if this has already been posted - I searched but didn't find an answer...

The salesmen are going to recommend whatever pays them more commission.

Ok, but is that the result of spreading the 36-month residual over 42 months? Coming up with a new hybrid 42-month residual?

It's not a modification of a 36 month or 48 month lease. It's just the time value of money.

I prefer a 24 month lease. One major reason is that by the end of a 36 month lease you are likely to have replaced all 4 tires. With a 42 month lease this is almost a certainty. Assuming $750 for a set of 4 tires installed and balanced, this amounts to the equivalent of another $20+ a month for a 36 month lease. On top of that there are other wear items (brake pads, wiper blades) that you may have to pay for once you get over the typical 24,000 miles of a 2 year lease. My 2 cents.

Hmmmm...I never thought of it that way. I can't lease a car cause I put too many miles on em and I like to do things like change the suspension/exhaust/brakes and yank out the stereo...oh and lets not foget about track days...

Hmmm ... where there's a will there's a way. Aside from the too many miles challenge (I dont do more than 25k per year), modding a leased vehicle isnt a problem. On a leased B6 A4, I put coilovers, h-sport sways, brakes, RNS-e, shortshifter, Miltek exhaust, MTM hi-flowcat with downpipe, big turbo with supporting mods (incl. FMIC and clutch) as well as a few other ods and ends. Car was completely demoded (except for the clutch), mods sold and car returned at the end of the lease.

Another consideration is the registration cost. At 42 months you will have to pay a 3rd time and then only get 6 months of use before you turn it in. With the reg running about $750 for my S5 out here in California that would be a waste of $$ in my mind.
