Default A5 3.2 vs. 2.0T?

Just pulled the trigger today on a Canadian A5 2.0T Premium, Tiptronic, Meteor Gray, S-Line, Drive Select, Nav Pkg, Tech Pkg. Only allowed a short test drive due to lack of vehicle availability in my city (I think the dealer wants to sell this car as new). Coming from a 2003 A4 3.0, the 2.0T seemed really noisy, somewhat unrefined and didn't feel that powerful, although the power was adequate. As this car only had 35 km, I attribute part of this to the engine not being broken in.

For those of you who have test driven both vehicles on more than a short test drive, which do you prefer if the cost was not a big factor (but still a consideration)? I may change my order to a 3.2 but wanted to hear some opinions as there will likely be no 3.2 available for me to test drive in the foreseeable future. Also heard that the 3.2 may be discontinued in the near future. Would I be affected if delivery is late April 2010? Thanks in advance.

I say stick with the 2.0T. Don't think of it as a smaller engine that's of lesser class. Think of it as a more advanced, efficient engine for the future. It's also much more mod-ready if you want more power (which can easily surpass the 3.2). Sound can be modified. Also, the fact that Audi is discontinuing it may mean possible future difficulty in acquiring parts and support later in its life.

But I never drove the 3.2, so my opinion may mean squat to you.

There are so many threads on this at this point. I would suggest searching through the archives for a lot of perspectives on this.

The 2.0T in my a4 is my first 4-cylinder since school twelve years ago. I find it very quiet and quite torquey, and I came from a 330i 255hp. I think the power is either underrated or so usable that it feels that way. 6MT helps, I remember test driving a tiptronic and finding a bit louder and vaguer.

i'm a fellow canadian owning a 2.0T as well. It only gets a bit more noisy if you stay in gear. Much more quieter than my previous TSX with cold air intake lol. I thought the 3.2 v6 would sound just as loud but sounding differently?

And as a car tuner (a small one) i would go with 2.0T over 3.2 anytime because you have more options at tuning a turbo than a v6

I've had a V6 Solara for several years and frequently drive 4 cylinder Toyotas as part of my job. I can't get over how smooth and quiet the 2.0 is. It blows away anything Japanese I've driven. I was squeamish about spending 50K on a 4 cylinder car but I can't even tell.

With no doubt, 6 cylinder gives you more smoother ride. beside the fact you are getting a luxury car. To me a luxury car starts with 6-cylinder engine.

Also if you think about a faster car, 3.2 is definitely faster than 2.0T

But have you driven the 3.2 vs the 2.0t, I have driven both without a doubt the 3.2 is a more powerful, smoother engine, if you are a modder or can't afford it get the 2.0t, or want extra feul mileage (although only slightly), if you are not any of those people get get the 3.2. The 3.2 is stronger especially once you get into high way speeds it doesn't seem to have to work as hard. The 2.0t for what it is , is great little engine. The 3.2 is better IMHO, but serves a different purpose.

Deep down I agree with you. I guess I have no choice in the matter with the Cabriolet. I really like the styling and the many features the car offers so I will deal with it.

So far my A5 Cab's 2.0T feels a little sluggish at times in drive mode. In sport mode it seems to be more quicker with more pep.
