Can anyone confirm if the iPhone needs to be connected via the iPod adapter in order for the MMI to mute radio playback or other music playback, etc. when receiving/making calls?

I wouldnt say perfectly. I have Bluetooth high and my iphone works with it but many of the things that worked on bluetooth with my previous nokia dont work with the iphone.
e.g. No sim access profile (so it uses the phones power and aerial and not the car - so sound quality not as good), no ringtone selection (phone rings as well as default car one), no text messages

With OS 3.0 now you can listen your voice messages by using the iPhone phone messages option, or the old way by calling your own iPhone number (at least with AT&T)
