Searching the web I found some applications where a 3M coat substitute was applied to the windshield so negate both chips and pitting.
I do alot of highway driving and pitting is a huge issue.

Mine's called Diamond Fusion or something like that. It's guaranteed for 3 years. If it cracks in that time, they replace the windshield. If it chips, they repair the chip. It cost about the price of a new windshield, but like you, I drive on the highway a lot, and I usually go through a windshield every 18-24 months.
It's a little soon to tell, as I've only had the car 4 months, but so far I only have a couple small marks, but otherswise no pitting, and no chips or cracks.

Because having the film there probably will just make the windshield more awkward, plus you are still going to get pitting on the film, and usually the film will get dirty and discolor etc.
No deductible windshield insurance is a wonderful thing.

It's a windshield treatment. Like rain-x on steroids. Reduces glare, chipping and pitting. Also makes cleaning easier.
