The arguments for and against the 3.0T and 4.2 engine....
One option next year for my next car is an S5. During that time, about summer...will be right when we see the 3.0T coming and no doubt the 4.2 being phased out. (might catch a deal on one)...
Anyway...the 3.0T by all accounts looks to be a great engine and better then the outgoing 4.2....its quicker, its more tunable, has better MPG, lighter and with what looks to be an identical or maybe even lower cost of entry as well...so why the longing for the 4.2...? I know that the audible experience is a very important part of the driving experience and I do agree that the 4.2 will wipe the floor with the V6 here.....however...there is another component that I think must be discussed and that is the thought and ideal, right or wrong that a traditional GT car has a beefy V8 under the hood....and without one...something seems off....
I can see both arguments and holes in both as well....right this second I almost am in favor of the 4.2. Let the S4 have the 3.0"T"...my first reaction is...big V8 GT car...thats what this car is....
Just my .02 and I would be interested in what others have to say. I will tell you one thing....Audi will have to get there head out of there *** in the next 18 months regarding leasing and residuals though, becuase I am not leasing one for 1K a month thats for damn sure (but thats another post for another time)
So...3.0T or 4.2...which would you want and why? Which belongs in this car? What would current S5 drivers choose, if they where to buy the car again and had both choices?
Go....

did you see this comparison between the new S4 and the 335i?

keep in mind that the Germans test 0-60 different than we do (difference can be around ~0.5s).
Looks to me that the 3.0t engine is significantly quicker than the 4.2, which in most tests hasn't proven to be much faster than the BMW twin turbo. And this is without DSG, which should make acceleration even faster if it includes launch control.
And then of course you have the added advantages of tunability and gas mileage.

Even if the 3.0 T is faster than the 4.2 I would still choose the 4.2.
I love the sound. I love the sound. The torque is fantastic as the car effortlessly pulls from low RPMs.
I have to say one of my favorite times is cruising on the highway at 75 and without shifting out of 6th gear pulling it right up to 120 or so.. It's surprisingly quick. Of course, it all happens much faster with a downshift or two, but it's not necessary.

Based on better 'theoretical' performance and fuel economy my personal choice would have to be the 3.0T. Also, since the 3.0T is a shorter engine and a bit lighter their should be less weight hanging out over the front axle. This may make handling better, will have to wait and see on this.
Now for those that must have a V8 maybe the rumored XF Coupe with the new 5.0 V8 would be right up your ally.

Topspeed 2010 Jaguar XF Coupe Preview
