Update:
We've just completed downpipe prototyping and testing.
Unfortunately, what we thought were main cats in the OEM downpipes turned out to be little resonators. Once we discovered that, we knew that there would not be huge gains from replacement downpipes.
We prototyped a set of 2.5" diameter ones (larger than stock) and for all intents and purposes, there were no significant gains.
Dynosheet of our catback vs our downpipes with our catback:

However, the addition of the downpipes really woke up the sound even more, and I think this combination will satisfy S5 owners looking for a very aggressive tone. We will most likely offer the downpipes as an add on option to our catback. That allows owners to install our catback, determine if they want more sound volume and a meaner tone, and if so then order and add our downpipes.
Here is a quick video comparing our catback to our catback and downpipes. Right click, save as, it's a large file:

VIDEO of AWE catback and Downpipes!

Here's a quote from Todd from the Audizine thread that's going on:

The only cats found on the S5 are attached to the outlets of the exhaust manifolds. There is an O2 sensor in front of the cat, and after the cat.
The downpipes do not replace any cats. Nor do the O2 sensors have to be touched when changing downpipes.
Since the engine needs to be dropped to change out cats, we will not be offering a high flow cat option. We do not believe the majority of S5 owners will want to spend that much money on install labor for such a small potential gain in power.
So the bottom line is that downpipe replacements on the S5 yield no additional power, but they can make the sound more aggressive for owners looking for that. Our cat back design uses only one muffler as it is, so it would not really be possible for us to match the aggressive sound/volume that our downpipes produce by modifying the cat back portion.
