Default AWE Pedal Install

In order to get the gas pedal reach closer to the brake to enable some heel and toe action, I picked up the AWE pedal cover set.

<a href="http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/dbise/?action=view¤t=AWEpedals.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/dbise/AWEpedals.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

After install, I can report that the feel is much improved and the gas is right where it should be, under the right edge of the foot if need be. Of course, it doesn't hurt that these look nice and are inexpensive. It is also a mostly reversible mod, except for three small holes that would remain visible in the accelerator pedal if you ever took these covers off. The brake and clutch pedal pads could go right back on if needed (use silicone spray lube, if you must, to ease reinstall).

But, these pedals are made to fit many VW and Audis so they are not a precise match for the S5 pedals. The curvature of the clutch and brake pedal covers is more shallow than the factory pedals. This can probably be resolved by using a ratcheting tie strap wrapped around a baseball bat to bend in more curve, but I didn't think of that until after the install! Even so, this mismatch does not cause big issues - you just need to carefully mark your holes with the pedal cover poised in the same spot as you mark all three holes.

The accelerator pedal cover, however, is much more curved than factory. I don't think the screws have any chance of engaging holes drilled into the factory pedal without modifying this part. So, I placed the pedal cover between two wood boards to stomp it more flat. This got the curve very close to the factory profile, but it began to crack the nice anodized finish.

You can see this in the photo, some texture that runs across the second row of rubber nubs from the top. I was not happy about that at all, but I got these more to improve driving rather than to look at. I still can't think of a more gradual way to do a controlled unbend of such a stiff part (the AWE covers have a quite decent thickness, as you can see). Anyway, I leave it to the next guy to improve upon and enlighten us.

I was unsure as to how cutting threads in the plastic accelerator and clutch pedal would work as I've never cut threads in plastic before, but it worked OK.

Some caveats: You will need a right angle drill due to clearance issues. Oddly, a 10/32 tap is needed instead of a metric size, so check the toolbox before you get started.

Default Looks nice. Something the s5 should already come with...

My dad's A4 Avant S-Line came with them, probably the nicest design for pedals I've ever seen.

Default The right angle drill will certainly make install a lot easier.

I was able to install mine without one, but the brake was a real pain to get right and the whole job took a lot longer than it should have.
