Had a new '86 944 Turbo and traded it the following year for an '87 911 Targa . Both were FAST for the time : 0-60 in 6 .0 seconds , 0-100 in about 15-16 seconds , about the same for the Ferrari 328 . Only the Turbo, Countach and Testarossa were quicker .
Today, many sports sedans would dust them all in a straight line to those speeds !

I had an '88 944 Turbo S. The '88 Turbo S's and the '89s had more power--247 hp vs. 207. Not bad for a very light car. The S was officially rated by Porsche as 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, and that was quite conservative. These cars were actually fairly slow off the line though-considerable turbo lag. Almost any American car could beat you across an intersection. But once the boost came on, they were very impressive even by today's standards, and they were fairly easy to mod to get 300 hp. plus.
The 944 Turbo Ss were one of the best stock handling cars I've ever driven, including my modern day Carrera. There was virtually no squat or dive, and the balance was perfect, with very good steering feedback. They were sort of a sleeper car; they were a much better all round performer than the stock 911 and arguably the 911 Turbo. But then, my car listed for $ 49K, which was a lot of money in 1988.

It had an amazing , sharp " old world clubhouse " aroma that enveloped you when you opened the door and imparted that aroma to your clothes the rest of the day , too! Today's leather is tanned differently and no longer has that heady smell, due to environmentally mandated changes to leather tanning.

In the mid -80s , the 944 Turbo was the ultimate " yuppie " sports car . You couldn't go to any " yup-central " area ( like Chestnut Street in SF or Oak Street in Chicago ) w/o being surrounded by them .
BTW, one of the best personalized plates ever was from that time on an Audi 4000 Quattro I saw in SF with the plates that read " YUP 4X4 " , back when no one cared much about AWD , and 4x4 evoked images of trucks with knobby tires raised 5 ft above the ground !
