It really depends on the scratches, but it will be hard to remove almost any scratch with a hand-applied product. Light surface scratches really need to be removed by polishing them out with a machine polisher. This is quite doable as an amateur if you have a polisher. If you don't have such equipment or don't want to purchase it along with the necessary polishing compounds and learn how to use them then you would be best-served taking it to a professional detailer.
Deeper scratches (ones that can catch a fingernail as you drag it across) may not be removable with simple machine polishing. They might require wet-sanding and re-polishing through multiple grits. This is work that definitely should be left to a professional.
Very deep scratches (gouges) will need work at a body shop to repair.
