Over in Europe, they have something called the City Lights, and that's what that space is for. I am not sure if it is wired for it to work or not, if you are really set on have it work, try a real bulb and see if it lights up or not.

They are used to illuminate one side of the car, when you turn on the indicator and the car is turned off, which ever side indicator is on that side light stays on.
You need a dealer VAS or a VCDS (Vag-Com) and the correct coding to turn the feature on , then put a bulb in, I didnt have any luck getting to work. some people have Swapped the connectors and put the connectors that run to the park lights in the slot with the city lights, see the picture, i know its a bad picture taken with a cell phone

Thanks for the explanation - I had read a while ago that this was for European cars, but didnt get what they did...I have seen Mercedes that have one of the rear lights on when parked on the street so you dont hit them, I guess this is the same idea but for the front of the car...
