So S5's 0-62 time is listed as .2s faster than the S4's 0-60 time, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect magazines to get 4.8s out of that car.

..other than CD and gearing.
With that in mind, I'm looking at the 2008 mileage numbers for the A8 and A6 (with essentially the same engine as the S5) at 16 City, 23 Hwy and noting the A6 weighs some 600 lbs (!) more than the S5.
I'm hoping that means the S5 will at least get 17 - 24 or there abouts. We'll see...<ul><li><a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008car1tablef.jsp?id=23237">A6 Mileage</a></li></ul>

qualify, but that link shows it not being hit by it. Even the old ratings would seem to put it in the gas guzzler bracket. What am I missing?

The site I linked to above has the chart for the GG Tax starting at a combined 22.5 mpg, but the same site clearly lists a large number of vehicles with lower combined mileage NOT being gas guzzlers. Strange...
Could the GG calculation have been modified to take the new CAFE mileage standards into account??? (Since the mileage on virtually every vehicle dropped, maybe the GG limit did too.)

I have that issue of Road and Track. They dig the A5/S5 a great deal. I bet R&T is foaming at the mouth at the anticipation of the RS 5. So am I, BTW.
As much as many AudiWorld members (excluding myself) would love for the RS 5 (and B8 RS 4) to have a twin turbo or triplecharged (supercharged and twin turbo) 4.2L FSI V8, it will not happen. The B7 RS 4's Getrag ML600 6-speed manual transmission (which will most definietly be either the standard transmission or the only transmission in the B8 RS 4 and RS 5) simply cannot handle the torque that a twin turbo or triplecharged 4.2L FSI V8 would have to be tuned to produce at this point in time (450lbs/ft of torque/610 nm at the very least to be exact).
The B8 RS 4 and RS 5 will have either Audi's 4.2L FSI valvelift V8 or Porsche's V8 with 4.5L of displacement, FSI and VL (valvelift). Either way, the V8 in the B8 RS 4 and RS 5 will have high revs (8,200 or 8,250 RPM redline), normal aspiration and 100 SAE hp per liter (420 or 450 SAE hp overall depending on which V8 the B8 RS 4 and RS 5 have).
