Basically you epoxy some heavy duty rare earth magnets to the back of the spot where the plate would be attached. Glue some plastic screw caps on the plate itself to look like that is how it's attached. Then you can securely attach a plate at will when needed, with no damage to the car.

Another option is to get your plate made Euro style, with your number combo. It's still not regulation, but it does show the all important numbers.

You see, one of the reasons I've been so paranoid about this is that I run this gauntlet quite often taking my S-O to school and back. For some reason, the area around the school swarms with police. Many days I have to revert to drivin my beater just for piece of mind. Normally, one of the things I do in this area is turn off the daytime running lights, since they attract way too much attention. Did I do that today? No. Did someone notice. Yes. Ugh. Fortunately, it was a verbal notice, since I had the plate in the back and said I was waiting for the part to come in, and could show him that Ive only had the car a month.
Im still not pleased. So Im ordering the filler panel, and will decide whether to put it on or just do the magnet method, which looks pretty interesting.
I swear, they don't call me "black cloud" for nothing.
