I get my S5 in a few weeks. It will be at the port on Wednesday and then another 10-14 days to get to South Florida. I can't wait.
With gas prices rising every day and not knowing if they will ever return back to normal, do any of you use regular or mid-grade gasoline in your S5? I know Premium is recommended but I was wondering if you can get away with mid-grade. Will it affect the engine in anyway to not use Premium gas in the vehicle?
Just wondering what you guys think about this.

The ECU will auto-retard the timing to protect the engine from pre-detonation (aka knock or ping) if you use a lower octane rating and you'll subsequently lose a good deal of performance. Strictly speaking it won't damage the engine, but why buy a V8 if you can't afford the proper fuel???

Is there even a huge difference putting in regular? At most its like 5-10 bucks per fill up. If you can afford an S5 I'm not sure why you will have problem with gas. Unless you fill up every other day or something. If gas is a concern, I don't think you should buy luxury/sports cars.

91 vs 93 probably doesn't make too much of a difference, so if you want to save a few cents you can choose 91 at Sunoco or other stations with 4 grades.
You could use 89 in a pinch, but it really doesn't make sense to save $2-3 per fill up on a $65K car if you aren't going to get the most out of it.

This has been killing me lately. The absolute highest octane fuel (that is not 10% ethanol) that I've been able to find up here lately is 91. A few stations that had 92 and 93 seem to have quit carrying it.

The S5 is tuned to run on 91 octane. running 93 isnt going to help it or hurt it.

Also note that many oil companies include more or better additives to their premium gas that improve lubrication and cleaning.

+1 Note Audi's Top Tier( http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html) recommended gasoline vendors, due to their better detergents and hence lessening of carbon deposits.
I've used Shell and Mobil for years.
