As for using Mobil "for years" - unfortunately Exxon/Mobil wasn't on the top tier list until relatively recently ...

I got an A5 2.0T last month and I was told that using mid grade (89) was OK.

As already noted, the ECU will auto-retard the timing so no problems with using 89, other than losing some performance.

You bought a luxury sports coupe - give it the fuel it deserves (or trade it in on a Corolla).

Mobil gasoline was one of the first with a detergent, but their assimilation by Exxon kept them off the list until recently.

....and reduced fuel economy offseting the perceived savings at the pump. It's all a wash in the end.

Compression ratios are high today, combustion chambers are designed around a higher octane fuel to obtain all the power from these modest displacement engines.

salesman will tell you anything to sell a car, but I wouldnt run 89 on a turbo motor... you wont get full power output of the motor
