how do allocations work?

So i went to check out a bmw and audi dealer, and the salesperson i usually talk to said they have an available allocation for the s5, so if i placed an order now it should be ready in ~3 months, but they still have a waitlist for the a5. does this make sense? if a dealer says they have an allocation does that mean they have an available build spot ready or what? Im trying to decide between the s5 whose waitlist bugs me for a car that will start plummeting in a year or so, and 335xi which is being discounted fairly heavily and still is a very nice car regardless of what audi homers say. but if the allocation spot is true then i'd really be interested in the s5 again.

I had a similar situation, and frankly, at first, didn't believe what I was being told. The important thing is whether you are getting a car that someone else put an order in for long ago. That's what happened to me. I was told in late January, that if I got my order in, Id have a car in about mid-May. I thought 3.5 months was an absurdly short wait, but I hadnt realized that the wait was actually much longer, only that I hadnt done the initial part of the waiting. My order ended up taking over a previous order that someone cancelled that was already expecting an allocation date on. Now, it could have turned out that the allocation never arrived, but it did as the dealer expected. So, I ended up with a build date of Mar 17 having ordered on Feb 5. That normally would never happen. But I got in just at the right time, so it doesnt hurt to be lucky.
