If I custom ordered an S5 now...
Would I be getting at 2009 or 2010? When would it be likely to come in? Any discount off MSRP possible? If so, about how much is reasonable to expect?

price
He can't negotiate the price if its a 2010. Although i guess technically, he can negotiate it based on MSRP, or MSRP +/- $$$. But sorry dude, you may not know the actual price until shortly before your car gets here. A lot of us went through this, myself included

I haven't ordered yet. Believe me, I will negotiate price as part of the ordering process. I was asking whether it was reasonable to expect any discount off of a custom order and about how long it would take from now to take delivery given that it is closing in on model year changeover. I'm asking here before talking to the dealer to try to get objective info. Thanks.

Model year switch has already happened, so nothing is being built now for 2009. You have to negotiate for a 2009 from what's on their lots. If the car spec'd like you want isn't close by, work with whatever dealer closest to you can do a dealer trade for the car you want (if its out there). If you're going to do a custom order (better get it in now if you want this summer), best you can do an Invoice + $markup deal
I had done that with my 2009 order, which rolled over to a 2010 and they will honor whatever the Invoice + my negotiated mark-up will be.
It's reasonable to ask for a discount off a custom order, however, practical negotiating will win out. Your best bet is to do email negotiations with all dealers within a 25 mile radius and see who'll do the best Invoice + m.u. deal for you. I used that technique and worked with 4 dealers until I got what I felt was fair. Most will only do a small amount off from the MSRP, but I did find 2 who would work from their invoice costs upwards instead of going in the opposite direction down from MSRP.

What did you ultimately agree to above invoice for your custom order? $2000? $3000?

You can most def get discounts on 2010. I used Tiger's approach and simply emailed 10-15 dealerships. I only got 3 replies but they were willing to discount. Make sure you are able to get a dealership with allocation instead of just taking an order and that your order is ranked high on their list. I actually had mine change one of their cars in Factory Order Bank to reflect my order. I say it's not unreasonable to have $1000 to $2500 off sticker.

$1,800 over Invoice, which equated to about $2,000 under the 2009 MSRP of the car as I had it spec'd out. Most dealers I was in contact with only wanted to go as low as $500-1000 below MSRP.
