Music Interface Question...

...sorry - I've searched the threads, but can't quite figure this out.
Is the Audi Music Interface "dock" in the glovebox an industry standard connection type or Audi proprietary?
In other words, can I buy the adapter cables from Radio Shack or do I have to buy them from my Audi dealer?
The Infotainment/MMI operating manual indicates that "You can purchase adatper cables from your authorized Audi dealer or an electronics store" (pg 16), but I can't determine the type of connection needed to plug into the car.
Thanks in advance.

As far as I understand it, its a proprietary deal. The dealers have them for purchase, either for iPods, or generic MP3 players. I got my dealer to throw in the one for the q7 at no charge (which i think they should do if you have the option), otherwise its a $60 or so for the cable.

Reminds me of Best Buy only stocking $30 printer cables (not included with the printer, of course), when you could buy the cable elsewhere for a few dollars.

Although be sure to push the dealer for the option. I think it should be included (at least thats what one dealer told me [Momentum in Houston, so I tend to believe them])

Yup. I just dropped by today to pickup the window sticker(I'm sentimental in that sense!); I didn't even mention it and he said "OH, I forgot to give you this iPod cable."

The AMI connector in the glove box is proprietary. You have to buy the adapter cable to connect a device.
There are 4 cables available:
- AMI -> iPod
- AMI -> USB female (like the jack in your computer)
- AMI -> mini USB
- AMI -> mini stereo plug
The dealer should give you one with the car. I don't use my iPod but am planning to use either a USB hard drive or a USB stick, so I asked him for the female USB adapter instead.
My salesperson actually didn't know about the cable adapters, but when he researched it, he was cool about the whole thing.
I assume you've already bought the car. There is an internal AoA memo that 'recommends' dealers give out a cable with each car. You can use this for leverage if your dealer is a stickler about it.
