I think you are a bit mistaken. The latest initial quality ratings put MB at #5, which is WELL above Audi.

Default S5 fo sho...

I might be a little bias because I drive the S5... but the CLS looks too long and "elegant", even though I think it looks like ***... never been a fan ever since the newer ones came out in 2000, the previous boxy looky ones I really loved.

How did you test drive the car? Did the salesman let you put the pedal to the metal? (I test drove the demo and took it 130 MPH without even knowing it, then when I picked up my car few days ago, my salesman told me repeatedly to break-in the car hahaha) Plus, what are you basing the "not enough power" on. 1ST gear WOT was plenty fast for me, but, hey, my previous car was an E36 M3.

*Woops, I read the later response that you drive a Porsche already... guess you have good comparison =)

Default MB has been bringing up the rear in Consumer Reports for a couple of years

and IMHO, JD Powers Initial Quality is not a very useful measurement, as it only measures problems in the first 90 days of ownership. Seeing that improvement is encouraging though, but I'm still waiting on the fence until there is more data. If they do well in CR too, then I would consider one.

Look at the chart in the link and you'll see that not a single MB vehicle is recommended by CR.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-a-to-z-index.htm</a

Default You do know that is only an Initial Quality Rating? Hardly a long-range dependability rating.

This is last years rating from Consumer Reports. Kind of hard to find Mercedes on the list.

Default I ordered it new at the end of July. Pickup wasn't until Oct 15 although

that was in Germany. Had to wait until November to get it on US soil.

Default Thanks. I feel the same way - the design was attractive enough to forgo several other things...

Such as brute power (RS4 or Corvette Z06), moddability (335), spectacular agility (Cayman S). I do need more fast on this thing, though... if we get the RS5, it's next.

Default Re: MB reliability = awful. i like their styling and power, but i'm staying away unless they improve

I must be the lucky one. Other than routine maitenance, I've had no problems with my '03 E500 (102K miles daily driver, replaced soon by the S5), '04 S500 (55K miles, wife's car, soon replace with 2008 S550 4matic), '05 SL55 (17K miles).

There are problems in the past with MB electrical (ie. audio gateway). The engines are solid and reliable though. I did have to replace my MAF on my SL55 but it was my fault as I replaced the air filter with K&N and the red lubricant on the K&N messed up the MAF.
