Overview of the ordering process
#11
Great post. I have similar question. I signed the paperwork to order 2010 S5 with the expectation that they would "adjust" an S5 that is already in the Factory Order Bank (I presume this is an April allocation) to reflect my color options etc. They claim that they couldn't modify it yesterday due to system issues?? They will supposedly try again this morning.
My question is -- if the dealer is in fact telling me the truth, does this mean that April allocations are being pulled from factory and cannot be modified to my spec now? I thought that the April allocation would close right before the May allocations are given - mid May?

I don't know though whether all cars from one allocation are pulled for production before the following allocation though; can anyone confirm that for me? It sounds reasonable. I mean, if an April allocation order didn't hit production until some point during May's allocation, that would put production behind schedule, right?
If April orders are all pulled for production stock before May's allocation, then yes; you'd only have a couple of days left to change the order around!

Who knew ordering cars could be so difficult After hearing people waiting for months (some close to a year), I am apprehensive about going to just any dealership.
Thus, I went with one of the largest audi dealers in the area thinking that they would have the most number of allocations. I went to the dealership to talk to the sales person.
Evidently, he tried to change a 2010 S5 that has already moved into production - well, duh, I wouldn't think you can change that. He then tells me that he tried to change the first one on the Factory Order Bank but the system was down. I actually saw the print out of the cars he mentioned so I don't think he is lieing or anything.
He felt confident that by Monday that he should be able to modify the first car on factory order bank to show my options. Again, I presume this would be part of the April allocation since the order bank closes on May 13th.

Scott, what was your allocation month, and when did your car hit the factory order bank? Trying to gauge build weeks and projected delivery dates.

See my sig. My intention is to update it every time I get updates from my dealer and then one final time once I take delivery.
For comparison to the actual dates, here were the original dates I was given, as well as all the changes to all the dates.
Original Dates Provided:
------------------------
Factory Order Bank: 04/20/09 | Build: Requested 06/08/09 (W24) | Assigned 06/15/09 (W25) | Actual 06/22/09 (W26) | Ship Load: 07/08/09 | Port Arrival: 07/21/09 | Dealer Delivery: 08/17/09
Revision 1:
-----------
Ship Load: 07/20/09 | Port Arrival: 07/29/09 | Dealer Delivery: 08/24/09
Revision 2:
-----------
Released to Carrier (Port): 08/07/2009 | Rail Load: <unknown> | Rail Unload: 08/17/2009 | Truck Load: <unknown>
Actual:
-------
Entered: 04/20/2009 | Marked Sold: 04/20/2009 | Vehicle Assigned: 04/20/2009 | Release to Manufacturing: 05/08/2009 | Release for Production: 06/18/2009 | Factory Inspected: 07/08/2009 | Departure Port Arrived: 07/10/2009 | Ship Loaded: 07/21/2009 | Port Arrived: 07/31/2009
It is my understanding that the dates were pushed ahead a week because the original ship load date was based on the requested production date. My actual production date was 10 days later than the assigned production date due to the factory special order options I requested. I was told they could hold up production slightly. The ship load, port arrival and dealer delivery were all pushed forward which pretty much corresponds to the delay in production, so not really any surprises there.
I've been told by a reputable Canadian sales person here that S5s (if not other models as well) have been held up at port since last week which is why my Released to Carrier isn't happening for another week. Not sure what the hold up at port for 2 weeks is about. I hope I'll be able to get some insight there.
Dealer delivery is currently week of 08/24/09. I expect it will arrive a couple of weeks sooner than that; hopefully week of 08/10/09.

I believe the S5s and A5s (3.2L version only) are being held up at port because pricing for the 2010 models has not been set yet. There are some threads on other forums about this.

As far as my understanding goes, it's only US models that are being held at port. Canadian models (as mine is) in Halifax are not being held (with the exception of S4s).
