RS5 2011 Front tyre uneven wear
#21
Uneven tire wear like the photos above has NOT been my experience with my last 4 Audis... I guess it could have been less noticeable as I rotate my tires and switch between a winter & summer set each year. However, when the tires have been worn out, they have never looked like that!

Out of interest guys.
I took my RS5 to a specialist performance car dealer who recognised the problem straight away.
They re-tracked the wheels to closer to edge the Audi "tolerances" which reduced the wear on the tyres without affecting the handling.
Apparently the"exact" Audi tracking is too aggressive on the tyres, and this adjustment reduces wear whilst remaining within tolerances.
It's improved the lifespan of my tyres substantially.
If anybody wants to see the exact tracking specs I'm sure I could get them and post if it would be of help?

Thanks for the update. This tire wear issue can bet expensive and had me looking to purchase an M3 as opposed to the beloved RS5. If you could post the numbers that would be great...and maybe the cost. The cost isn't so critical because its probably much less than buying new tires.

Its also an A4 problem --check the photo
I had an identical tread wear issue with my 2011 A4 with Sport Package last weekend. The OEM Pirelli P7 right-front tire (with 18.5K miles on it) had the inner tread separate from the tire through the entire circumference. Audi diagnosed it as excessive toe-in.

So this is evidently an issue concerning the entire A4/A5-based series.
My guess is that this may be a Pirelli issue, or an issue where people have lowered their car or an improper inflation issue, or something else....but it isn't an Audi A4/A5 issue. If it were you would hear tens of thousands of people not 3-4.

I've edited my original comment to delete the conjecture, and to just stick with the facts. My car's tires were inflated to 33PSI front, and the car's ground clearance is unchanged from the factory Sport Package settings. There was no evidence through the car's steering of any abnormalities in the car's alignment, either before or after the incident and subsequent tire replacement and re-alignment.

My 2015 S5 does it too. I get about 25000 miles out of a set of Michelin Pilot Sports when the inner edges cord. It’s frustrating because the tread is otherwise still even and good. I run 40 psi all around to help. FWIW inner edge wear would be caused by excessive toe OUT and to some degree excessive negative camber but my car checks in spec. Steering wheel is centered and it tracks perfectly straight. I think it’s a geometry, suspension design issue. Higher performance cars are built with non Ackerman geometry to aid high speed cornering. This does however result in tires scuffing in low speed ( parking) maneuvers. I had a Porsche before the S5 that did the same.
