K&N in both our Q5 and S5 for years. Never an issue. Not concerned with additional HP but rather maintenance. I wash and oil both K&N and throw in the OEM while they thoroughly dry.
Lots of folks running on dirty/restrictive OEM air filter that is only evident, when a clean, new one is installed.
Our K&N is cleaned after every other oil change. Replacing with an OEM at every other oil change is more expensive (long term) than initial purchase and subsequent cleaning of the K&N's.
