Its about how you drive it....trust me...the 6 is more efficient than the 8. I can say my Range Rover was more efficient than my 76 BMW 2002...but I drive the hello out of my 2002...so it gets like 15 mpg...even though its a 2L 4 cylinder engine...I have HIGE carbs and a lead foot. If I drove civilized...I'd get 26 MPG easy....

Besides the potential efficiency differences between different engines, the engine size is a factor, and the gearing makes a huge difference as well.

I drive my V8 S5 aggressively - my wife gives me the evil look when I go beyond 100+ on the highway haha. Anyway here's a puzzle, I did get a loaner A4 Avant with the 2.0 engine when I had my A6 Avant serviced for 75K. The tank was full. I was getting a 375-380 mile range on the 2012 2.0 4-cylinder turbo engine with 8-speed transmission and I get a 370-420 mile range on my V8. Gas tank capacity is around 16+ gallons on both cars. I drove it the same way. Go figure. My worst sports car was a Mazda RX8 - 14 MPG haha with a 1.3 rotary engine and only a 200 mile range - same aggressive driving style as my S5.
