My car consistently is reading 4-6 degrees above the actual temperature-- anyone else have this problem?
I have a Q7 also, and it reads pretty accurately. As to what i am comparing, i tested against bank thermometers, the downtown official temp (when i drive thru that area... i even took an ORegon Scientific temp monitor and had it outside....I know, not exactly accurate ways to measure, but the S5 just seems to be reading too high?
Thoughts?

The most extreme example is in traffic on the Interstate in the summer it'll be 10 degrees or more off. Winter temps have typically been more accurate. I think it's just a matter of where the sensor is placed.

The sensor is located right in front of the radiator. If you're stopped, the sensor will start reading the air coming off the radiator.
If you're moving, the sensor will read the in-coming air from the grill, but I think it is still slightly influenced by the radiator even then, and might account for the increade from the bank temperatures.

Why does the sensor need to be near the engine in the first place? I know, for incoming air gives you a more instant temp reading, like a pitot tube, but could it not be toward a front corner?
60k, and the temp can't be close than 5 degrees? I can stick my hand out the window and estimate the temp better than that....
just blowing steam... 212 degrees... or is that 207????????

by the heat radiating from the engine, also displaying warmer than normal temperatures if the car has been sitting in the hot sun. It should be pretty accurate once the car is moving and air is flowing through the grill.

Hi;
Agreed on effects due to the temp sensor placement and high reading while sitting still. BUT.. don't forget, when you are driving, you are on top of a large piece of concrete/asphalt that has been in the sun all day and radiates heat back into the air.(re: post about 10 deg high in summer, but not winter)If you compare that number to a temerature recorded at a real weather station where thermometer is protected from radiational heating, it will be high.

the Q7 reads differently on the same roads. And when i get up to 40-50 mph, engine heat becomes a non-issue with the air rushing in.
Here's another observation i made- last night i parked the S5 in the garage, and the last reading it gave me was 79
Around noon today, i wnet to go do a few arrandes. Opened the door (no sun beaming on the car while in the garage...), my garage temp was 81-i have a temp sensor out there i can read from in the house- outside was 83...when i started the car up, it read 95.
I went down the road for 5 miles, and the temp sensor never got down to 90.
when i got home, i immediately got in the Q7, and within 2 miles, the temp was reading 84.
??
