So i was a bit worried with the posted EPA mileage of 14/21 and gas guzzler tax and all that, but i've been pleasantly surprised by what i've seen in only my first 300 miles with the S5.. on the highway doing mostly 75-80 in the mornings and afternoons i'm seeing an average of 21.9mpg, and taking the back roads which are stop-and-go the whole way with maybe a full minute of any sustained speed, i was getting 17.8mpg - this is averaged over 6 days of commuting, 3 days highway, 3 days backroads..
i don't feel particularly thrifty in my driving, i certainly don't hold back, though i'm not exactly pushing it in my small commute (25mi), but i'm pleasantly surprised with the numbers i've been seeing.. it's significantly better mileage than similar driving styles on my Magnum and that has the multi-displacement system that deactivates cylinders while putting along on the highway, i have to tone it down a lot to get the same mileage from the Magnum..
i mean, not that they're comparable autos at all, they're just the only two data points i have at the moment..

I love to read about real world gas mileage achievements with this car. Thanks for sharing.
If I can editorialize a little bit, I dismiss viewpoints along the lines that if you can afford this car, you can afford the gas or if you buy this car, you're not buying it for the gas mileage. Rubbish; gas mileage always matters. It just matters differently to different people.

hadn't looked at it that way - i guess in a way i'd be relatively unaffected if gas went to $5/gal or if the S5 got significantly worse mileage or something like that, luckily i don't use enough of it to cause a huge problem relative to my budget, but it's always nice to save a little money.. i'm mostly pleased to meet or even beat the EPA ratings since for me those are usually absolute best case scenarios if i drove all downhill with a tailwind.. with the engine off..
i feel a little less guilty driving a pleasure car in today's conservation atmosphere if i can squeeze 20mpg out of it.. i'll never get that kind of mileage from my charger (it's actually measured in gpm), and to do so in the magnum would neuter it, so with the S5 i can feel hedonistic and slightly socially/environmentally conscious at the same time.. sure, not as much as that tesla roadster or whatever, but i'll take what i can get..
it's a pleasure car that's a complete indulgence, but it consumes far less than my neighbor's minivan which hovers at 13mpg!
and i feel even better getting better mileage out of the wife's Q7!

one weekend while visiting my folks i set out to see what my mileage could achieve.. It's very difficult but i managed to keep it above 25, my hometown has 11 stoplights total. Stop signs in my town have so little traffic i frequently roll through them in third gear.
it's such a tease trying to get good mileage in this car. it's so easy to rev it out and ruin the mileage completely.
A day on the track gave me 7.5 mpg.

So much depends on how you drive it and the conditions you are faced with.
My commute is 75 miles roundtrip on 60% highway, 40% rural roads. I don't drive aggressively in traffic. My everyday average in my bonestock 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo is 24.5 MPG against a revised EPA rating of 14 city/20 highway. I only hope I can do the same in the S5, if it ever shows up.
