Default Sportiness of the A5.

From the time that I was driving the A5 during the test drive, I found it to be a great drivers car, but besides looks, does anyone think it is really sporty? Performance wise, what do people who drive it every day think?

if by sportiness you mean throttle response, peppy engine, communicative steering, and good shifting in a manual.

then it's not a sporty car
it's a great looking, well made, tourer
but sportiness is not one of its traits

ofcourse eveyone here will disagree with me
i think the looks of he car have clouded the judjement of most members of this forum

Default It's sporty...

...but it's not a performance car. Fun to drive, good throttle response and steering, great roadholding. But not an all out performer, and not a particularly light weight car.

Default I'll agree with kmarei

I do like the shifting.

However, I'd say the throttle response and steering have more of a "comfort" aspect than a "sporty" aspect.

Then engine peppiness is... okay, but it needs to be revved at high RPM to get some feeling of power out of it. Nothing close to the chipped 1.8T I had or a chipped 2.0T I have had the chance to try, which had torque at a very low RPM.

I love my A5 for many of its characteristics, but if I had wanted a car with a real sporty feeling to it, I would have gotten a TT or a 335.

Roadholding is indeed excellent (with S-Line).

Default Dynamic Mode w/ Drive Select makes a HUGE difference...

Still not a pure sports car, but after test driving the '08 A5 w/o Drive Select multiple times...I can tell you that the '09 with Drive Select in Dynamic mode is like a completely different car in terms of pickup, steering/suspension feel, etc...

I love the sporty feel, but to be honest, I drive in comfort mode more often because the aggressiveness of the 1st/2nd gear in dynamic mode can jerk you around a bit.

I have to agree that allthough the A5 is nice it is not sporty(unlike the S5) whoes driving dynamics are above par,THIS COMING FROM A GUY THAT HAS OWNED AND DRIVE BOTH THE RS4+6,

Drive select as in putting it into sport mode? Also is drive select standard, or an option? If so, which option package is it under, or its' own option?

Default Option, it's not sport mode, it's multiple different settings 27 to be exact, control steering,

throttle, suspension

3 basic modes are dynamic, standard, comfort I believe, but you can tune it, it's quite a bit more, dynamic (sport) mode is just 1 of many modes the car can be put in.

Default It is a spiffy $3K option that electronically controlls throtle, steering, engine

and best of all, suspension dynamics.
