Default For the Tiptronic guys

Can you feel the car downshift when slowing down to a stop? My 8-speed used to jerk occasionally when shifting from 4th to 3rd when the car was new. After 6,000 km, the jerk seems to be gone but I can still feel the car downshift (not jerky but still noticeable in an engine braking-kind of way...best I can describe it) from 5th to 4th and from 4th to 3rd. The upshifts, on the other hand, are totally imperceptible. Is this normal?

I don't feel any downshifts except for 2-1. 4000 miles on mine.

Interesting. So you don't feel any engine braking at all?

In my car, if you step off the gas and just let it coast, you can feel the car downshifting from 5th to 4th and then from 4th to 3rd (though I can't feel the 3-2 and 2-1 shifts). It feels like a gentle brake effect each time the tranny kicks down a gear instead of smoothly coasting to a stop like other autos.

None that's noticable at least. My 2-1 downshift is harsh at times which we have discussed A LOT in the A4 forum. I'm travelling 300 miles for the holidays today so I'll test it out on the highway and report back.

On the upshifting side of things, I like to play a little game called 'Guess what gear I'm in'... after a stop and I get back going to a constant speed 30,40,or 50mph, I immediately try to guess what gear I am in and throw it in manual mode to see if I'm right. I'm never right. I always guess too low. Gotta love the super smooth upshifts!

is this in S mode? I would think that it would downshift to give you more power for instant acceleration. The downshifting puts a drag on the engine so you should feel it.

Both D and S.

Now that we have put S mode in the equation - I definitely feel downshifts and engine braking when decelerating in S.

Mine definitely downshifts when in sport mode, and engine brakes down to about 1500 rpm where seems that it releases and coasts to a stop.

Now if it were only smarter on the up shift behavior.

Re: "roughness", after 10k on an 8 spd Tip, I can certainly attest that downshifts are definitely noticeable ("clunk") in the lower gears when coming to a stop, even more so when in "s" mode. Thankfully not so when upshifting. Still, IMHO the software or ??? controlling the mating between the 2.0T and this tranny should be better than what it is.

I have noticed the same harsh downshifts at low speed. The transmission seems to get especially confused when quickly giving the car throttle at low speed and then letting the car coast, such as in a parking lot.
