You can have your dealer reset the ECU to original factory settings. Since the car "learns" the way you drive, it makes thousands of adjustments over time. Resetting always helps. I have mine reset whenever it's in with the dealer for regular servicings. Makes a heck of a difference.

I have an observation I would like to add, here, about my car. I can see this car indeed "learning how I drive. At least,I hope that's what it is. You see, I took a drive over the weekend, on a very long, hilly, curvy, mostly blind road. I kept it in M, and mostly 2nd gear, for the torqy "punch factor". (I love it, the wife hates it, but anyhoo...) So anyways, the past couple days as I have driven to work, I now notice the engine braking going on that I have never noticed before, while in auto. If that is the car "learning", then very cool. But, can you break a tranny by holding it in one gear for a long time (I never came remotely close to red line)?

I can definitely feel the downshift and upshift. I usually stick with manual mode. I just don't like how fast the auto shifts for your or late on downshifting when acceleration is needed.

On the upshifting side of things, I like to play a little game called 'Guess what gear I'm in'... after a stop and I get back going to a constant speed 30,40,or 50mph, I immediately try to guess what gear I am in and throw it in manual mode to see if I'm right. I'm never right. I always guess too low. Gotta love the super smooth upshifts!
I did the same thing in our 8 speed Q re what gear ?...
until I did the vagcom to display d1-d8 too

upshifts are imperceptible, but downshifts used to change at a bit too high a speed and thus the slight bump.... now that we have about 10k it downshifts very smoothly...

have heard there is a software change to adjust the TCM - tranny ctl module...

Default Downshift

I just got a 2012 A5, 8 speed tiptronic, it only has 1,600 miles and I do feel the downshifting from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1 every so often.

The noticeable downshifts are a "feature"... The 8-speed tiptronic actually allows the 2.0T to turn off its fuel injection completely when coasting, but in order for the engine to smoothly start up again when you hit the throttle without using the starter motor, engine speed must remain above 1000RPM-ish. So, when coasting down, the car will continually downshift to keep within that speed range.

It should be noticeable (like mild engine braking) but it shouldn't clunk or be excessively harsh, or else you might need the transmission downshift TSB that flashes the firmware. If you want to defeat that feature, you can just lightly rest your foot on the accelerator when coasting.

My A5 downshifts in both D and S modes, and I always feel it. The downshifts at different times between the two, and the S mode is a bit more jerky and noticeable, but not bothersome. It's just the car's trait and I accept it.
