I'm single/no kids and sometimes find the S5 could use more room! Q7 is a huge step up though.. Wait out for the S4 avant, or something more exciting than a huge SUV. Unless of course you're buying a boat you want to trailer around too.

The first year with the rear facing carrier will be tough. Once that turns around though unless you need the extra room for other crap like strollers and such I'm not sure you need to make the leap. As pointed out above if there is already a larger car in the house then you should be fine. If this is the only car though its going to be a lot tougher to put the carrier in and out 50 times a day.
If you do make the change in a few years you can easily be back in the new S5. My girls are 5 and 3 and they live in my S5 during the weekends. Plenty of room for the 4 of us and their crap in the trunk.
Good luck - with more than just the car.

My daughter is 4 and there is more than enough in the back of the A5, more room than the 2003 A4 Avant. She is in a booster now and room for all of us in the A5. In the Avant with a rear facing seat, it was really tight.

I am not a big fan of box on wheels, I been considering it because of the new addition. I was also looking at the BMW X6, the interior on the x6 is not that great and the exterior styling is not for everyone.

I do have a Q7 3.6 Prem. Sure it has lots of space and you can take a basketball team with you where you go. If you are buying a Q7, please don't go with 3.6. It is too slow too heavy. I should also let you know that I am having a hard time to keep my Q7 and be happy. It seems that every part of the car rattles (maybe just my luck!), that's why I can't wait for my S5 to get here...should be in late July....I hope.

I was just going to say: go with the S4. Good choice. Four doors are absolutely a must when dealing with babies. Forget "doable." Babies are too tough as it is.
It's nice you get the best of both worlds now!
