Talk about gratuitous (and unfounded) insults:
"A German acquaintance of the Telegraph Motoring desk tells us that the R8 is regarded in the fatherland as look-at-me transport for well-heeled hairdressers, and at first sight there is plenty to suggest that what Audi is billing as its first out-and-out sports car (as opposed to a sporting, rally or racing model) is all fur coat and no credit card ..."
Not to mention the use of the term "junior sports car" -- what does that mean?!?

they are saying the CLK looks sexier than the A5...they're nuts. I'll reserve judgement as to whether the BMW coupes' look better until I see the A5 in the flesh. I doubt it -

The Telegraph is not Britain's finest example of motoring journalism. Due to the popularity of the paper with the Conservative (Tory) party, it is often referred to as the 'Torygraph'.
They do make a valid point though, is this car a Grand Tourer or just a coupe? I feel that this is a coupe and not any kind of Grand Tourer car. Remember that a British GT car is a DB9 or XKR, so it is not an apples to apples comparison throwing the A5 in that lot.
I think it is a good looking car, but not as a design forward car like the TT in 1999 and the R8 in 2007. If you classify it as a GT car, it certainly will munch through the motorways easily, but its presence is as a Gentleman's Tourer. The subtlety of it makes it special; the TDI powerplant, the interior quality, the sexy flowing lines. It need not scream when a whisper is all that is required.
It will be a difficult decision to decide between this and the TT...
I would point out that American car reviews are often pointless. They never find anything wrong with them. A misplaced switch or cheap plastic may be mentioned, but mostly, it is pretty biased to the positive things about them, the negative things just don't make press. The only American car mag I can stand now is Winding Road as they actually use the car and make the necessary comments where applicable. The British car magazine Top Gear is world renowned for actually pointing out the good and the bad on the machine in test. It is a winning formula
