Default To upgrade rims or not?

Hey everyone...

I'm in sort of a dilemma right now. The 2013 S5 comes standard with All Season tires on 18 inch rims. For an extra $1500, I can get the summer tires on 19 inch rims.

To be honest I'm not really fond of the summer rims and I actually liked the Y-spoke rims on my A5 more than I do those on the S5.

So... here's what I was thinking... keep the allseasons, use them as my winter rim+tire... This means that in the heaviest of storms I will be on 4 all seasons. That's my first question: safe or not?

I thought that if I was to upgrade the rims ($1,500) plus buy new winter rims + tires ($1,500)... that would leave me at $3,000 for nice rims + tires.

I would like to stay a little bit below that. I was looking at these http://www.velocitymotoring.com/wheels_v710.html rims with no selection of tires. What do all of you think?

What sort of rim/tire size will fit on an S5? this is without rubbing, etc. My old a5 ran 255, I was wondering... should I upgrade to 275 for the S5?

Thanks

Since you really don't like the 19 wheel stay with the 18 and all season tire, and use that as your 'winter' wheel.

Anyone who owns an S5 in northern states will be confronted with two seat of wheels. I plan to buy 18 winter wheels, likely a black OZ. I am a sucker for Italian wheels.

The wheels in your link look very nice. Are they forged or cast? Audi factory wheels are forged (at least the 19's are).

I can speak for the safety of the factory 18's with all season tires. They are ridiculously good in the snow. I live in upstate NY and have driven through some pretty extreme weather without issue. That being said, may be cheaper to upgrade to the Audi summer performance wheel package and then get aftermarket 18's/winter tires...

Those VMR 710's are nice. Also check out Avant Garde, Hartmann and Forgestar. ModBargains is a great place to wheel shop. As for sizes, 20x9, 9.5 and 10 all work well. Do you like are more aggressive offset? Also, wheels width depends on tires. I have run, 255/35 and now 275/30. With a 20x9 and et35 will work but you may want spacers. 20x9 et20 is a very nice look as well and will not rub. Check my build thread...may help as I have run three sets of 20's.

I'm curious how the S5 comes with 18s? Are you outside of the US? When I look on the website, the 19s seem to be the only choice.

+1. In the US both the S5 coupe and cabriolet come standard with 19's and summer tires. Since the OP is named "Albanyboy" it would seem logical that he may be from NY or Georgia. So either: (a) Albanyboy is not in the US, or (b) he is actually looking at an A5 instead of an S5, or (c) the car is not new, and a previous owner put 18's on it.
